The first mistake that you want to avoid in affiliate marketing is trying to be everything for everyone.  You’re not running a Wal-Mart on the Internet, you are trying to market to a specific group or audience and offer them something that would be of interest to them.  This is what is commonly known as niche marketing and affiliate programs really lend themselves to this type of marketing very nicely.  Once you understand the concept of niche marketing and the fact that you’re not going to be able to sell ice cream the Eskimos, you will be miles ahead of those people that are just starting out in affiliate marketing.

The next thing that you want to do is to focus your efforts in one specific area.  Yes, it never hurts for you to branch out a little bit but the last thing that you want to do is to spread yourself too thin.  Unfortunately, affiliate marketing makes it very easy for us to play in a lot of fields so we need to be disciplined in order to stick with one particular niche.  Once you find what is profitable for you and exploit it to the best of your ability, you may want to branch out a little bit.  Until that time, however, make sure that you put blinders on and don’t allow your marketing efforts to wander.
